The Pittsburgh Penguins community gathered to honor the life and legacy of Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Lange, who passed away on Wednesday. The tribute took place during a Saturday afternoon game, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of "A Hockey Night in Pittsburgh."
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby expressed the collective sentiment: "Obviously, he was a great person and means a lot to a lot of people – here, the organization, the fans, the city. I think the tribute was really nice and to have his family here to recognize him. He's going to be missed, for sure."
Crosby joined teammates Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang at the Zamboni gate with Lange’s sons Tanner and Ian and their families. Members of Lange’s broadcast team—Joe Brand, Josh Getzoff, Eddie Olcyzk, Paul Steigerwald, and Phil Bourque—also participated.
PA announcer Ryan Mill stated: “Our guests on the ice represent the multitudes of people Mike loved and influenced throughout his life.” He added that while Lange's passing brings sadness, his legacy should be celebrated for creating lasting Penguins hockey memories.
A video tribute followed by an emotional moment of celebration took place in the arena. Mike’s son held up a sign reading ‘Thank You Pittsburgh,’ met with applause from attendees.
In homage to Lange, a booth on the Mike Lange Media Level remained dark except for his desk lamp and iconic headphones. Players from both teams wore helmet stickers featuring Lange's headset during the game.
Fans were invited to pay respects at a special display at Highmark Stage featuring those headphones. Duane Thomas from Olean, N.Y., remarked on Lange's impact: “I'm not from Pittsburgh, but I believe he was part of the heart of what Pittsburgh is.”
Vince DiAngelo from Clairton shared similar sentiments: “He's on the Mount Rushmore of people (in Pittsburgh).”
Famous phrases like “Get in the fast lane, grandma!” adorned posters created by fans at DICK's Sporting Goods Hallway of Champions as they honored Lange.
Laurel George from Plum expressed her admiration: “He really brought the game alive,” adding that his enthusiasm made any call extraordinary.
Lange had a unique saying for Crosby: “Slap me silly, Sidney!” fittingly as Crosby scored during this game along with Letang assisted by Malkin. Malkin mentioned having a milkshake in honor of Lange: “I know he is sick the last couple years... It’s hard to say anything right now... It’s great words for me.”
