The NFL Scouting Combine is set to begin next week in Indianapolis, where 329 draft-eligible players will be evaluated by all 32 NFL teams. The event requires significant preparation from both the league and individual teams.
Each NFL team typically receives seven draft picks annually, although these can change hands. Additionally, the league awards 32 compensatory picks each year, effectively creating an eight-round draft with 256 players selected. Many of those attending the Combine may not be drafted but could become undrafted rookie free agents, with around 200 signed after the draft.
Attendance at the Combine does not guarantee selection in the draft. Players are chosen based on input from all teams and must have a "draftable" grade. However, some players still slip through unnoticed. For instance, Steelers cornerback Beanie Bishop was not invited last season but played in all 17 games for Pittsburgh as a slot cornerback.
The draft process is imperfect due to its inherent variability. While physical attributes can be measured, intangibles like passion for the game are harder to gauge during interviews at the Combine.
The Combine marks the beginning of the offseason as free agency opens on March 12. Steelers General Manager Omar Khan will address media questions about their plans for free agency and quarterback strategy but is unlikely to reveal specific details.
Historically, the NFL Draft has evolved from a 12-round format in 1992 to its current seven rounds since 1994. Notable late-round successes include safety Darren Perry and long-snapper Kendall Gammon for Pittsburgh in earlier drafts.
Despite perceptions otherwise, Pittsburgh concluded the previous season as one of the top tackling teams according to NextGen Stats with an efficiency rating of 89.1 percent. Linebacker Alex Highsmith was noted for his perfect tackle record over 45 attempts.
As a team, Pittsburgh missed only four tackles per game throughout their schedule which included facing formidable rushers like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry twice.
Predictions about postseason outcomes or awards following a season's end often prove inaccurate due to roster changes before new campaigns commence; such forecasts are largely speculative without considering upcoming free agency moves or draft selections yet to occur.
