Before the practice on Friday, Penguins Head Coach Mike Sullivan announced Sidney Crosby's appointment as captain for Canada and Erik Karlsson's role as an alternate captain for Sweden in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off. The news was well-received by the team.
"We're certainly proud of those guys," said Sullivan, who will coach Team USA at the tournament. "I think it speaks volumes for the character of the individuals, and the respect that they have from their peers in their relative countries. I can't say I'm surprised. I'm not. I know what they do for our team."
Connor McDavid had previously supported Crosby's selection as Canada's captain, calling it a "no brainer." He emphasized Crosby's leadership experience and contributions to international hockey.
Crosby has achieved significant success internationally, including two Olympic gold medals (2010, 2014) and victories in other major tournaments like the World Cup of Hockey (2016). Reflecting on his new role, Crosby expressed his appreciation: "I think just the responsibility and being part of that group is something I'm excited for."
Karlsson will join Sweden’s leadership alongside Victor Hedman as captain. William Nylander and Mattias Ekholm will also serve as alternates. "It’s obviously a huge honor," Karlsson remarked about his position.
Team USA will be led by Auston Matthews with Matthew Tkachuk and Charlie McAvoy serving as alternates. Sullivan noted their different leadership styles: "Austin isn't so much a rah-rah guy, but he leads by example... Charlie and Matthew are two guys that are going to drag us into the fight."
