Joe Greene, a legendary defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers, announced his retirement from professional football on February 10, 1982. The announcement was made during a luncheon at Three Rivers Stadium. Greene's career with the Steelers was marked by numerous achievements, including four Super Bowl victories and two NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Greene's former coach, Chuck Noll, praised him during the announcement. "He set the standard for us," Noll said. "Physically, he had quickness, speed, agility, strength, and the ability to find the ball. But he also set the standard for attitude. There will never be another Joe Greene."

Greene's impact on the team extended beyond his physical abilities. Despite initially being disappointed when drafted by a struggling franchise in 1969, Greene's dedication and performance transformed perceptions of playing for Pittsburgh. His No. 75 jersey was retired in 2014 as a testament to his legacy.

"Joe could best be classified as a winner," Noll added. "He was a guy who had great physical abilities, the ability to come off the ball fast, the ability to play low, and the ability to play every play to the end."

Greene's career highlights include induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987 and selection to multiple All-Pro teams. He was also named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1969 and honored on both NFL Anniversary and All-Decade teams.
