Steelers President Art Rooney II addressed the media on Monday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, discussing various topics related to the team's 2024 season. He repeatedly used the word "disappointing" to describe the season's end after losing five consecutive games.

Rooney emphasized that addressing the quarterback position is a top priority for the 2025 season. Since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement in 2021, Pittsburgh has started five different quarterbacks. Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, who played all 18 games in 2024, are set to become unrestricted free agents when the new league year begins on March 12.

"After the coaching staff is in place, the priority will be the quarterback position, for sure," said Rooney. He acknowledged both Wilson and Fields showed potential but indicated decisions need to be made regarding their future with the team.

Rooney outlined qualities essential for an NFL starting quarterback: reading defenses and making appropriate play calls. "I think they're both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them," he stated. He also mentioned considering options in upcoming drafts as they have multiple positions open in their quarterback room.

Regarding re-signing both Wilson and Fields, Rooney remarked it was "probably unlikely" as both players see themselves as starters. Reflecting on Kenny Pickett's tenure, he expressed disappointment that Pickett did not become a long-term solution at quarterback.

Rooney also commented on Coach Mike Tomlin's performance despite recent struggles. "When you look at how many games Mike (Tomlin) has won in this league, you don't win that many games if you're not a good coach," he said. Rooney affirmed his belief in Tomlin's leadership despite frustrations over recent results.

Other topics included evaluating running back Najee Harris' future with the team and wide receiver George Pickens' development potential. Regarding Harris, Rooney noted his value while acknowledging other teams might share interest due to his abilities.

On Pickens' growth potential: "George (Pickens) is a very talented player who has room to grow." The Steelers have yet to discuss a contract extension for Pickens entering his final contract year from being drafted as a No. 2 pick in 2022.

Addressing fan discontent within Steelers Nation over recent performances, Rooney shared their frustration: "My inbox has been pretty full... I understand why people are mad."
