The Pittsburgh Steelers' special teams unit had a standout 2024 season, marked by multiple blocked kicks that underscored their commitment to what they call "block culture." This term, frequently used by both head coach Mike Tomlin and special teams coordinator Danny Smith, reflects the team's strategic emphasis on impacting games through special teams plays.
Defensive lineman Dean Lowry highlighted the importance of this approach, stating, "Danny (Smith) preaches the 'block culture' every single week. 'Mike T' (head coach Mike Tomlin) brings that term up a lot, so does Danny. I think it comes with energy and having a good gameplan going into Sunday."
During one remarkable stretch in October, the Steelers managed to block kicks in three consecutive games. Defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk blocked a 38-yard field goal against Dallas on October 6. Outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon followed with a punt block at Las Vegas on October 13. Lowry then rejected a 35-yard field goal attempt against the New York Jets on October 20.
This achievement made the Steelers the first NFL team since the 2017 Patriots to block kicks in three straight games, something Pittsburgh hadn't done since 1991. Lowry noted they could have had another block in the Jets game if not for a penalty nullifying Minkah Fitzpatrick's extra point block.
Tomlin expressed his appreciation for these efforts: "Can't say enough about our block units," he said. "It's not just an agenda for us. We try to live it. We develop skills in that area."
Smith praised his players' dedication: "I'm going to tell you what, it's these guys," he insisted. "They work their butts off for me...These guys are special, all of them."
As Smith concluded his 12th season with Pittsburgh in 2024, he emphasized how important it is for him to work where special teams are valued: "I only want to work where (special teams are) important...It's fun to be at a place where it's very important."
