The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to face their first AFC North opponent of the season, marking the latest a team has played its first divisional game in NFL history. With a 7-2 record, six of the Steelers' remaining eight games will be against division rivals.
Head coach Mike Tomlin expressed indifference about the scheduling. "I don't care," Tomlin said. "I'll play them whenever they schedule us. We've got no control over the schedule."
The Steelers will begin their divisional matchups against the Baltimore Ravens, who have a 6-3 record and feature reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. The Steelers have had success against Jackson, winning three out of four games when he started as quarterback for Baltimore.
Baltimore's offense has been bolstered by running back Derrick Henry, who leads the NFL in rushing yards. Meanwhile, Jackson leads in passer rating and is near the top in touchdown passes and passing yards.
Tomlin acknowledged Jackson's growth as a player. "I just respect what he's capable of doing," Tomlin said of Jackson.
The Steelers are coming off a narrow victory over Washington and aim to replicate their defensive performance against another strong offensive team.
Injury updates include outside linebacker Alex Highsmith being week-to-week with an ankle injury, while Preston Smith was acquired from Green Bay to strengthen their linebacker depth. Nick Herbig is expected to return after missing games due to a hamstring injury.
Tomlin also addressed a failed fake punt attempt in their last game that led to Washington scoring early on. He took responsibility for the play but emphasized its preparation since spring training.
