Evgeni Malkin's contributions helped the Pittsburgh Penguins secure a 4-2 victory over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. Malkin scored the decisive goal and provided an assist in Friday's match.
Bryan Rust facilitated Malkin's crucial goal by carrying the puck into the offensive zone and passing it to Malkin, who was well-positioned to score. "I knew I was going in there on a forward, so I just tried to take him wide," Rust explained. "I saw over my shoulder somebody was going to the net, so I just tried to kind of lay [it off] the pads, cause a little havoc and I was able to find ‘Geno.’"
Noel Acciari sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final seconds of play. Erik Karlsson also made significant contributions with a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh, which had previously lost to Carolina Hurricanes. Joel Blomqvist recorded 32 saves.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan praised his team's performance: “I thought [the third period] was one of our more complete periods, just kind of digging in and playing a team game,” he said. “Really proud of the guys against a team that’s playing extremely well right now."
For Washington, Rasmus Sandin and Andrew Mangiapane found success on offense while Charlie Lindgren made 28 saves. Despite their efforts, Capitals defenseman John Carlson acknowledged missed opportunities: “It felt like we had the momentum when they scored there [in the third]. We had a lot of good chances throughout the game that could have maybe changed the trajectory of it."
The Penguins initially took control with Karlsson scoring early in the first period followed by Michael Bunting extending their lead shortly after. Capitals coach Spencer Carbery admitted his team underestimated their opponents: “We were not good to start,” he stated.
Sandin cut into Pittsburgh's lead during the first period before Mangiapane tied it up in the second period. The game remained even until Malkin's decisive goal late in regulation.
This match marked another chapter in Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin's storied rivalry as they faced each other for the 70th time. Although Ovechkin did not extend his point streak this time around, both players continue their competitive history against one another.
