Head coach Mike Tomlin evaluated the Steelers' new acquisitions, wide receiver Mike Williams and outside linebacker Preston Smith, during practice on Wednesday. The trades were finalized at the NFL's deadline on Tuesday.
Tomlin stated that their roles in the upcoming game against the Washington Commanders are still undecided. "This weekend, Sunday is not the end game," he remarked at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. "We acquired these guys to be with us for the remainder of this journey."
He expressed satisfaction in adding experienced players as the team prepares for a crucial part of the season. Regarding their future use, Tomlin said, "I think we're going to determine that, and there's some variables in that equation."
Williams was acquired from the Jets to bolster the wide receiver lineup. The 30-year-old has recorded 321 catches for 4,972 yards and 31 touchdowns over eight seasons but suffered an ACL injury in 2023. He played nine games for the Jets this season with 12 receptions for 166 yards.
Smith joined from the Packers after playing defensive end in Green Bay's new scheme this season. The veteran has achieved 68.5 career sacks.
Tomlin emphasized strengthening key positions led to these trades: "We're just stacking our chips. This is an arms race. It's highly competitive."
Both acquisitions aim to enhance team depth as they progress through the season.
