2021 Magee-Womens Summit

Spring wellness classes hub

Upmc Mercy School Of Nursing recently issued the following announcement on Nov. 12.

WHAT: The 2021 Magee-Womens Summit, presented by UPMC and UPMC Health Plan, will bring together world-class scientists, clinicians, thought leaders and advocates to explore women’s health research across the lifespan. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on clinical sessions, this three-day conference focuses on themes including healthy beginnings, shaping metabolism and healthy mind through transitions.

The summit begins with an afternoon dedicated to advocacy on Nov. 16, followed by two full days of research and clinically focused keynote talks and panel discussions on Nov. 17 and 18. The Magee Prize Dinner, held the evening of Nov. 17, will feature the awarding of the $1 million Magee Prize, funded by the Richard King Mellon Foundation.

  • Nov. 16, 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 
  • Nov. 17, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. 
  • Nov. 18, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WHY: The Magee-Womens Summit is designed to harness cross-disciplinary innovations and pave the way for a new generation of visionary research, with a special focus on reducing disparities in women’s health care. 

WHO:   

  • Laura Helmuth, editor in chief at Scientific American, will give the keynote address at the Magee Prize Dinner.
  • Benjamin Danielson, M.D., pediatrician and clinical professor of pediatrics, University of Washington School of Medicine will discuss confronting structural racism in health care systems.
  • U.S. Sen. Robert Casey and Pittsburgh Mayor-Elect Ed Gainey will offer a policymaker point of view.
  • Michelle Williams, Sc.D., dean of the faculty at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health will speak about redefining the future of health and wellness. 
Other participants include Leslie Davis, UPMC president and chief executive officer, and Anantha Shekhar, M.D., Ph.D., senior vice chancellor for the health sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.
