Ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers are navigating a rebuilding phase with clear gaps to fill. The team began the offseason needing reinforcement at quarterback and along the defensive line, critical areas as they strategize for future competitiveness.

The release of Larry Ogunjobi in March highlighted a deficiency in their defensive lineup. While the team addressed this by signing Daniel Ekuale and Esezi Otomewo in free agency, these additions appear to be complementary rather than direct replacements for Ogunjobi. The Steelers retained Isaiahh Loudermilk, maintaining a roster that includes Dean Lowry, DeMarvin Leal, Montravius Adams, and sixth-round draft pick Logan Lee. Notably, All-Pro players Cam Heyward and Keeanu Benton are relied upon, but the depth remains a concern.

The defensive line issues were laid bare in January when the team allowed 299 rushing yards to the Baltimore Ravens. Team president Art Rooney II emphasized the necessity of strengthening the defensive group: "On the defensive side, it starts with stopping the run, and we didn't do that down the stretch.”

With Cam Heyward turning 36 soon, the need for sustainability at this position grows. The statistics accentuate the necessity, with the Steelers yielding an extra 1.5 yards per rush when Heyward was sidelined last season. Adding rookie talent for the future is a priority, as Benton could shift his role to supplement defense under Heyward's mentorship.

In free agency, the Steelers found little opportunity to shore up the defensive line, positioning the draft as the primary strategy. The acquisition of Mason Rudolph provides insurance at quarterback, reducing the urgency for a first-round selection in this position, and allowing for greater focus on defensive line needs.

In preparation for the draft, the Steelers have diligently engaged with potential prospects, having hosted a significant number of draftees, reflecting a pattern seen in recent years. General Manager Omar Khan's tenure has demonstrated a clear intent through pre-draft visits, correlating with selections.

Strategic decisions also included trading their second-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for DK Metcalf, deviating from their usual approach of retaining high draft picks for players. Their draft history at the 21st pick is notable, yielding Hall of Fame talent in the past, marking critical choices ahead this year.

The upcoming draft will reveal the Steelers' prioritization of defense and how their picked players align with the team's strategy for the 2025 season, as indicated by commentator Matt Williamson: "Teams will never announce exactly what their plans are, but they will tell you their plans based on the moves they make." The outcome of these draft picks will shape the Steelers' direction in the coming NFL season.
