Marc-Andre Fleury faced the Pittsburgh Penguins for the last time on Sunday in Minnesota. The former Penguins goalie, who played 14 years with the team and won three Stanley Cups, had an emotional game against his old teammates.
In their first meeting this season, Fleury made 29 saves leading to a 5-3 victory for the Wild. However, in this final matchup, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin scored, securing a 3-1 win for the Penguins.
Bryan Rust commented on the match, joking about Kris Letang scoring. "But yeah, it’s cool. Sid and I were actually joking about it before the game," he said.
Fleury was hopeful that his friends wouldn't score against him. "Oh my God. Anyone but these two,” he remarked after the game. Crosby confirmed Fleury's words from the visitors' dressing room, saying he would remind Fleury of his goal many times.
Crosby reflected on competing against Fleury in practice. “He’s probably saved a lot more than I've scored against him," he said.
Fleury cherished his time with Crosby and Malkin, recalling their practices together fondly. “Obviously, playing together, winning together... but to be with these guys every day... is awesome," he said.
Crosby admitted his goal was fortunate as it deflected off Wild defenseman Brock Faber. Afterward, Crosby and Malkin met with Fleury outside the locker room.
Reflecting on their shared history, Crosby noted how quickly time passes. “You feel like yesterday you’re coming into the league,” he said.
During this game, Fleury moved into second place for all-time starts among NHL goaltenders (1,015). Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan praised Fleury's passion for hockey as key to his long career.
Fleury plans to finish this season before retiring officially. With the Wild in playoff contention, he's focused on staying present during games rather than getting caught up in emotions. “Honestly, I tried to not make it too emotional... I just tried to stay in the moment,” he stated.
