Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has become the first healthcare system in Western Pennsylvania to introduce Aquablation therapy using the HYDROS Robotic System. This new AI-powered platform is designed to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate. The therapy is known for providing significant and long-lasting relief from BPH symptoms while maintaining sexual function and continence.
BPH affects around 40 million men in the United States, disrupting urinary function and potentially leading to severe health issues if untreated. Traditional treatments include surgical options such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and greenlight photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP). While effective, these procedures carry risks of post-surgical side effects.
Aquablation therapy offers a minimally invasive alternative for patients with moderate to severe BPH symptoms requiring surgical intervention. The procedure uses robotic-assisted, heat-free waterjet technology for a personalized approach that precisely targets and removes problematic prostate tissue.
The HYDROS robotic system, supported by over 50,000 procedures, employs FirstAssist AI for treatment planning and advanced image guidance. This enhances efficiency and ensures accurate treatment for improved clinical outcomes.
“We are incredibly proud to lead the way in Western Pennsylvania by introducing Aquablation therapy to patients in our region who are experiencing advanced stage BPH,” stated Dr. Goutham Vemana, chair of AHN Urology. He noted that patients tend to recover more quickly and experience fewer side effects compared to more invasive treatments.
Dr. Sricharan Chalikonda, chair of AHN Surgery Institute, added: “AHN's urology team has long pioneered advanced urological care in our region, consistently leading in technological advancements and minimally invasive procedures.”
AHN's Department of Urology provides specialized centers focusing on various urological conditions affecting both men and women. These include prostate cancer, kidney tumors, erectile dysfunction, infertility, and urinary dysfunction.
For appointments with an AHN urologist, individuals can call (412) DOCTORS.
PROCEPT BioRobotics Corporation is behind the development of the HYDROS Robotic System used in Aquablation therapy. The company focuses on advancing patient care through innovative solutions in urology.
