Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has announced that its Center for Inclusion Health, part of the AHN Medicine Institute, has received a $1.8 million grant from the Jennie K. Scaife Charitable Foundation. This funding will support several programs within the Medicine Institute and AHN Women’s Institute aimed at addressing health equity in Western Pennsylvania.
The grant will benefit various initiatives including the Perinatal Hope Program, Humane Health Coalition, Healthy Food Centers, Chronic Care Specialty Team, and the Intimate Partner Violence Program.
The Perinatal Hope Program offers comprehensive care for pregnant and postpartum individuals with opioid use disorder. It provides medications, interventions, education, social support services, and community connections as part of obstetrics care. The program is a collaboration between AHN CIH and the AHN Women’s Institute and operates across multiple hospitals in Pittsburgh and Erie.
The Humane Health Coalition is a partnership between Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh and AHN CIH. Launched in 2023, it includes a mobile clinic providing veterinary care services alongside healthcare support for pet owners facing financial hardship or social challenges.
AHN CIH's Healthy Food Centers offer free nutritious foods and nutrition counseling to food-insecure patients struggling with health conditions. The centers have supplied over 500,000 meals to more than 56,000 patients and their families.
The Chronic Care Specialty Team assists patients managing chronic conditions such as heart failure or diabetes through a team-based approach to improve symptom control and reduce complications.
The Intimate Partner Violence Program was launched in 2018 in partnership with local domestic violence organizations. It provides real-time response to victims of domestic violence at several AHN facilities through medical advocates.
Liz Cuevas, MD, division chief at AHN Center for Inclusion Health stated: “We are incredibly grateful to the Jennie K. Scaife Charitable Foundation for their continued support of these vital programs which address critical health disparities in our community.”
The Jennie K. Scaife Charitable Foundation was established under the will of Jennie K. Scaife in 2020. The foundation supports programs that strengthen families and promote animal welfare among other causes.
