Benjamin Hill, known for his storytelling on Minor League Baseball, shares the journey of Drew Maggi, a long-time minor league player who made his Major League debut in April 2023 at nearly 34 years old. Playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Maggi's brief stint in the majors was a highlight of perseverance and dreams coming true.

Despite fading from the spotlight by 2024, Maggi continued his career with dedication. He spent time with seven Major League organizations over 15 seasons and represented Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic. In August 2024, he was playing for the Toledo Mud Hens, affiliated with the Detroit Tigers.

Maggi reflected on his experience: “After [playing in the Major Leagues] it’s been totally different, people coming up to me, telling me how I inspired them,” he said. Despite being released by the Pirates and returning to Double-A Altoona Curve—a team he first played for in 2012—he remained positive about his journey.

He expressed satisfaction with reaching a significant milestone but felt uncertain about continuing to play. However, as Spring Training approached, he decided to pursue opportunities again. Although unsuccessful at Brewers camp under manager Pat Murphy, offers came from independent leagues like Staten Island FerryHawks where he enjoyed camaraderie and culture.

Maggi's return to affiliated baseball came through connections within Detroit Tigers' organization. Billy Boyer initiated contact due to their past work relationship during Maggi's time with Minnesota Twins (2019-21). Ryan Garko also supported this move based on their history together.

“[Boyer and I] spent the COVID season together at the [Twins] alternate site,” recalled Maggi. His role is valued not only for skill but also leadership qualities that inspire teammates.

As speculation arises about coaching prospects post-playing career; however—true to form—Maggi remains focused on present opportunities without rushing future decisions: “I’m getting to do what I love...And when it’s done? I’ll figure something out.”
