Rocky Bleier, a former Pittsburgh Steelers player and Vietnam War veteran, has been nominated for the NFL's Salute to Service Award presented by USAA. The award acknowledges individuals within the NFL who have shown dedication to supporting the military community.
Bleier, known as Specialist 4 Robert Patrick Bleier in military circles, is a recipient of both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His journey began when he was drafted by the Steelers in 1968 but soon after was called to serve in Vietnam. During his service, he sustained severe injuries that threatened his football career. Despite this setback, with support from Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr., Bleier returned to professional football in 1971.
Reflecting on his career and life experiences, Bleier said: "When I came here, especially trying to make a professional football team, I didn't know what the future would hold." He attributes much of his success to being part of an exceptional team and organization.
In addition to his sports achievements, Bleier has remained active in supporting veterans' causes through various organizations such as Operation Strong Vet and Veterans Leadership Program. He also authored 'Fighting Back: The Rocky Bleier Story,' which was adapted into a television movie.
Bleier's contributions extend beyond veterans' support; he is involved with several community initiatives including Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics. He co-owns RBVetCo, a veteran-owned construction company.
His life story has been portrayed in "The Play: With Rocky Bleier," where Hall of Famer Lynn Swann described him as "a hero" who overcame significant obstacles. In 2020, Bleier received the NCAA Inspiration Award for his perseverance and role-model status.
Former teammate Mel Blount remarked on Bleier's impact: "He showed us all about perseverance, commitment and hard work."
