Before a large crowd in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro unveiled a significant initiative to revitalize Downtown Pittsburgh. The plan involves collaboration with local leaders, non-profit organizations, and the business community, including the Pirates baseball team. Over the next decade, the initiative aims to enhance the area through substantial investments.
Governor Shapiro announced that "the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will invest $62.6 million in Downtown Pittsburgh," which is expected to stimulate nearly $600 million in further investments. These funds will be directed towards developing new apartments, improving parks and public spaces, ensuring cleaner and safer streets, and creating vibrant neighborhoods.
Shapiro emphasized the collective effort behind this project: “It’s not just government that’s leading this. That’s what makes today so special and so unique.” He highlighted the involvement of private sector partners and civic leaders who are contributing their own resources to this cause.
The governor stressed the importance of Downtown Pittsburgh as a center for innovation, culture, and opportunity: “To have a strong and vibrant Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, we need to have a strong and vibrant Downtown Pittsburgh.”
Bob Nutting, chairman of the Pirates, expressed his support for the revitalization efforts: “I’m very pleased that the Pirates are going to be part of this major economic revitalization program that will create a more vibrant Downtown community.” Nutting noted that connecting key activity hubs like North Shore and PNC Park is crucial for both the team and the city.
Governor Shapiro acknowledged contributions from all three of Pittsburgh's professional sports teams as "a particular point of pride." He praised their commitment to enhancing community life beyond just sports events.
The financial support from these teams will help fund additional police presence downtown and expand services related to homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse. Nutting highlighted existing programs like Pirates Charities’ partnership with Allegheny Health Network as examples of ongoing social welfare initiatives they plan to integrate into this effort.
Nutting commended Shapiro's leadership in uniting diverse stakeholders for this project: “There’s no question [about] that... real leaders are stepping up and committing to the community.” The Pirates take pride in being part of such an impactful endeavor.
