United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan has appointed Assistant United States Attorneys Jeffrey R. Bengel and Nicole A. Stockey as District Election Officers for the Western District of Pennsylvania in preparation for the November 5, 2024, general election. Their role involves managing election day complaints related to voting rights issues, threats to election officials, and potential fraud.

Olshan emphasized the importance of fair elections, stating: “Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election." He added that election staff should work without facing unlawful threats.

The Department of Justice is committed to addressing violations such as voter intimidation, bribery, impersonation, and altering vote tallies. The Voting Rights Act protects voters' rights to mark their ballots independently or with assistance if needed.

Olshan reiterated: “The franchise is the cornerstone of American democracy.” He encouraged those with information on voting concerns or fraud to contact AUSAs Bengel and Stockey during polling hours at (412) 644-3500.

Additionally, the FBI will have agents ready across its field offices for any allegations of election misconduct on election day. The public can reach their local FBI office at (412) 432-4000.

Complaints about federal voting rights law violations can also be directed to the Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C., via their website or by calling 800-253-3931.

Olshan noted: “Ensuring free and fair elections depends in large part on the assistance of the American electorate.” In cases involving violence or intimidation at polling places, individuals are advised to contact local authorities immediately by calling 911 before reaching out to federal agencies.
