In the wake of the Pittsburgh Steelers' 28-14 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Super Wild Card game, quarterback Russell Wilson reflected on a season that did not meet expectations. Wilson, who joined the Steelers on a one-year contract during the offseason, was part of a revamped quarterback lineup alongside Justin Fields and Kyle Allen.
Despite their efforts, the team fell short of its goals for 2024. However, Wilson remains optimistic about his future with the Steelers. "I just love the guys. I love the locker room. I love Coach (Mike) Tomlin. Love who he is," Wilson stated as he addressed reporters following the team's final meetings of the season.
Wilson expressed confidence in the team's potential, saying, "I think we have a championship-caliber football team. It didn't go the way we wanted to this year." He emphasized his desire to continue playing for Pittsburgh if circumstances allow.
The veteran quarterback missed six games due to a calf injury but returned to lead the team in their final 11 games and into postseason play. During this period, Wilson accumulated 2,482 passing yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions, achieving a passer rating of 95.6.
Reflecting on his performance, Wilson noted areas for improvement: "There's moments I wish I played a little bit better...the one in Kansas City and the one in the Ravens game." Despite these setbacks, he remained committed to giving his best effort.
Wilson's presence revitalized elements of Pittsburgh's offense that had been lacking in previous seasons. His ability to execute deep passes enabled receivers like George Pickens and Calvin Austin to average over 15 yards per reception. Mike Williams also contributed significantly after being acquired midseason from the Jets.
Looking ahead, Wilson emphasized growth and development: "I just think that we got to recalibrate and get sharper on a couple things here and there." He acknowledged challenges faced by an inexperienced offensive lineup but remained hopeful about future improvements.
Throughout this season, Pittsburgh struggled with early-game execution but found success in second-half scoring drives. Notably, they completed a 98-yard touchdown drive against Baltimore after halftime.
Reflecting on their resilience against adversity, Wilson remarked on their determination: "We did a really good job of that...we didn't waver in our mentality."
As they prepare for next season under head coach Mike Tomlin's leadership—known affectionately as Coach T—the Steelers aim to address key areas while building upon promising aspects displayed throughout challenging times faced during recent campaigns.
