Eric G. Olshan | United States Attorney | US Attorney's Office Western District of Pennsylvania
United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan has announced his resignation, effective January 19, 2025. Reflecting on his time in office, Olshan stated, "The dedicated public servants who walk the halls of our office are second to none in their clear-eyed and even-handed commitment to pursuing justice on behalf of the more than three million people who call the Western District of Pennsylvania home." He expressed gratitude towards President Biden and other political figures for their support during his tenure.
Olshan's leadership was marked by a focus on combating violent crime and significant drug offenses in western Pennsylvania. The office prosecuted numerous cases against members of various street gangs and drug trafficking organizations (DTOs). The emphasis was also placed on reducing firearm-related crimes, with convictions secured against individuals involved in creating untraceable firearms or "ghost guns."
Significant efforts were made under Olshan's leadership to protect vulnerable community members from white-collar crimes. This included prosecuting scams targeting the elderly and securing convictions for those exploiting children through various illegal activities.
Cyber enforcement was another area where the office excelled, working with international partners to disrupt cybercrime networks operated by foreign entities. Additionally, efforts against terrorism led to successful prosecutions within the district.
The office gained national attention following its prosecution related to the antisemitic mass shooting at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue. Olshan remarked on this case as an enduring part of the office's legacy: "This investigation and prosecution will forever be a part of the fabric of our office."
In terms of community outreach, Olshan worked alongside law enforcement partners in educational programs and engagement events across the district.
First Assistant United States Attorney Troy Rivetti is set to assume the role as Acting United States Attorney following Olshan's departure. Rivetti has been with the office for over 27 years and previously served as Acting U.S. Attorney before Olshan's confirmation.
Olshan joined the Department of Justice in 2007 through its Honors Program and held various roles before becoming U.S. Attorney for Western Pennsylvania in 2017. His nomination by President Biden was confirmed unanimously by the Senate in June 2023.
