The UPMC Rooney Sports Complex witnessed a flurry of activity on Tuesday as players gathered for the first day of voluntary workouts, marking the beginning of Phase One of the NFL's offseason program.

"It's always good to see the building busy, moving and active," noted receiver Calvin Austin III, expressing enthusiasm for the return to a football environment.

The facility saw a mix of young athletes and newly signed veterans, all gearing up for the upcoming 2025 season. DK Metcalf, a recent acquisition via trade, shared his approach to integrating with his new team. "I'm just trying to get acquainted with my new teammates," he stated, emphasizing the importance of hard work and building respect and trust. Metcalf highlighted the significance of camaraderie, saying, "Everybody was coming up introducing themselves to me, I was introducing myself to people. The camaraderie is already being built, and it starts now to build momentum for the season."

Phase One spans the first two weeks of the program and focuses on meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation. However, the program's benefits extend beyond physical preparation.

Calvin Austin III elaborated, "It's great because this is the official start of the new year. This is a time you can get in and meet the new guys and get your first feel of team."

Linebacker Payton Wilson, now entering his second season, appreciates the opportunity to fully participate in the offseason program. "I'm excited to be back," Wilson commented, highlighting the importance of this period for team building.

Reflecting on the difference between this year and his rookie season, Wilson remarked, "It's a whole different world. Last year was just a lot, going from the college season to going to train and the draft and being here. You didn't really get any breaks. So now I'm just refueling my mind, reset and I'm ready to help this team win the Super Bowl."
