On April 10, 2025, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang reflected on their time with Ray Shero, the former Pittsburgh Penguins general manager who passed away at age 62. The trio, who won their first Stanley Cup under Shero's leadership, emphasized his influence in their careers and personal development.
Sidney Crosby recalled Shero's role in making him Pittsburgh's captain on May 31, 2007. "I remember just being a young player and just how instrumental he was," Crosby said. He highlighted Shero's supportive approach and open-door policy that made players feel comfortable and confident. "You could see what developed there," he added.
Evgeni Malkin mentioned Shero's efforts to bring him to the United States from Russia and Kris Letang spoke about Shero giving him opportunities during his early NHL career. "When I came into the league, Ray gave me all the opportunity to become the player I am today. I'm really grateful for that,” Letang said.
Shero was known for reshaping the team culture and surrounding the Big Three with talent. "He was going to give us an opportunity to win," Crosby remarked. Shero's strategic risk-taking included trades that showcased his commitment to team success. Crosby noted, "It's huge. I mean, that gives you a huge boost of confidence."
The respect for Shero extends beyond those who won with him. Notable figures like Ryan Whitney and Colby Armstrong also praised Shero, with Whitney labeling him "the best guy." Crosby reflected on Shero's legacy, saying, "He was involved with hockey for so long... We're forever grateful for everything that he did and the impact he had."
