The Pittsburgh Steelers continue their search for a long-term solution at quarterback following Ben Roethlisberger's retirement after the 2021 season. General Manager Omar Khan acknowledges the team's current situation is less than ideal, but emphasizes the importance of capitalizing on available opportunities. "It's not easy. It's not ideal," Khan commented during the NFL's Annual Meeting. "At some point, we have to find the long-term solution."

After reworking their quarterback lineup in 2024 by bringing in Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen, all three have moved on through free agency. As of now, the Steelers have only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson under contract. The team plans to bring at least four quarterbacks to training camp and remains open to acquiring new talent through free agency, trades, or the draft. Discussions with free agent Aaron Rodgers are ongoing, with no set timeline for a decision. Head Coach Mike Tomlin noted that quarterback and new Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf recently had a throwing session together.

The Steelers acquired Metcalf in a trade with the Seahawks, offering a second-round pick and a swap of late-round selections. Despite being the only quarterback under contract at the time, Thompson's presence did not affect Metcalf's decision to join the team. Metcalf joins a receiving corps with George Pickens, Calvin Austin III, and 2024 draft pick Roman Wilson.

Khan stated that they might receive future compensatory draft picks in 2026 due to free agent losses. These could aid the team in making strategic moves in current or future drafts. "All options are on the table if it makes sense for us," said Khan.

Changes to rules within the NFL are also under consideration. The Green Bay Packers proposed making the "Tush Push" illegal, a move that has gained attention but has faced scrutiny from those considering player safety.

In other news, Tomlin expressed enthusiasm for the Steelers' 2025 game at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland, marking the first NFL regular season game at the venue. The game will be one of seven international games during the 2025 season. Tomlin recalled the efforts of former Steelers president and chairman Dan Rooney, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland and contributed significantly to charity in Ireland.
