Sidney Crosby, the celebrated captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has reached a new milestone in his illustrious career. With his performance against the Buffalo Sabres, Crosby secured his 80th point of the current season, continuing his streak of averaging at least one point per game in each of his 20 NHL seasons. This achievement allows him to surpass the previous record held by Hall-of-Famer Wayne Gretzky, who had 19 such seasons.
Crosby has played in 72 games so far this season, contributing 54 assists and 80 points to lead his team, with 26 goals tying him for second place with teammate Rickard Rakell. Notably, 53 of his points have been scored during 5-on-5 play, putting him at the top of this category league-wide.
This is the 14th season in which Crosby has accrued 80 or more points, aligning him with Gretzky as the only players in NHL history with 14 or more 80-point seasons. The Pittsburgh captain holds a distinguished place among active players, ranking ninth in NHL history with a total of 1,676 points over his career, which includes 618 goals and 1,058 assists. He is one of only 11 players in NHL history to play an entire career of at least 20 seasons with a single team and his point total is the fourth-highest accumulated with one franchise in the league's history.
