The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced a $500,000 investment aimed at refurbishing the Ammon Recreation Center located in the Hill District. This funding will support a city-led renovation project to modernize the center, preserve its historical significance, and expand resources available to local families.
Penguins Alternate Governor Teddy Werner emphasized the importance of the center: “We know Ammon has been a cornerstone of the Hill District for generations, and we want to make sure it stays that way. Strong communities are built around places like this – where kids play, families gather, and neighbors connect. This investment is about preserving an institution that means so much to this neighborhood and ensuring it continues to serve future generations.”
Situated near PPG Paints Arena, the Ammon Recreation Center has served as a community hub since its construction in the 1940s on what was once Ammon Field. The facility has offered sports activities, educational programs, and event space for many years.
This recent contribution follows a previous $100,000 donation from the Penguins in 2020 which helped establish a Rec2Tech computer lab designed to bridge the digital divide for local students and families.
The Penguins' ongoing commitment to Ammon is part of their broader strategy for supporting economic and community development across the region. The team has collaborated with partners on various projects including securing funding for Frankie Pace Park and contributing millions to the Greater Hill District Reinvestment Fund. They have also prioritized allocating contracts to minority- and women-owned businesses through major initiatives such as the FNB Financial Center and an upcoming Music Venue development.
