When Stephanie Roche, a former Irish footballer, visited Tom McCormack in Dublin, he expected a discussion about his passion for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead, she surprised him with the news that he had been named the Steelers 2024 International Fan of the Year.
Roche shared a message from Dan Rooney, Director of Business Development and Strategy for the Steelers. "I'm sending you this message to let you know that you have been selected as the Steelers International Fan of the Year," said Rooney. He praised McCormack as a dedicated member of Steelers Nation who has supported the team from Dublin for many years.
Rooney also revealed another surprise: McCormack would join nominees from every NFL team at the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where the Ultimate NFL International Fan of the Year will be announced. "Thanks again for your support," added Rooney. "Here we go."
McCormack was visibly emotional upon receiving a customized jersey marking his honor. After learning about his recognition, he received numerous congratulatory messages from friends and family. Reflecting on his initial reaction, McCormack said, "Having an Irishman with very few words is unusual... But I was stumped. Absolutely ambushed."
The Steelers will play a regular season game at Croke Park in Dublin this season, following their rights acquisition to Ireland through the NFL's Global Market Program in 2023. This marks their first return since playing against the Chicago Bears there in 1997.
McCormack became interested in American football during a rugby tour with University College Dublin in 1979 and was drawn to the sport's differences from rugby. He also has family ties to Pittsburgh and connections with Dan Rooney Sr., founder of The Ireland Funds alongside Tony O'Reilly.
"The qualities and ethic of what they are on and off the field is what swayed it for me," McCormack explained regarding his loyalty to the Steelers. His memorabilia collection includes jerseys, autographs from players who visited Dublin as part of outreach programs, and cherished items like a signed photo of Dan Rooney holding up a Super Bowl trophy.
Despite challenges following American football from abroad during earlier decades, modern technology now allows fans like McCormack to stay connected with their favorite teams more easily.
