The Pittsburgh Penguins faced a challenging game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, resulting in a 6-1 defeat at the Wells Fargo Center. Erik Karlsson commented on the team's performance, stating, “I don’t think we played particularly good today,” and acknowledged that the Flyers outperformed them.
Following a strong showing against the Rangers on Sunday, where they lost 5-3 despite playing well, Head Coach Mike Sullivan noted that his team started with good energy. However, they quickly fell behind 2-0 within the first 12 minutes. Phil Tomasino managed to score for Pittsburgh early in the second period, bringing his recent tally to three goals and five points over seven games. Despite this effort, Philadelphia soon regained control with two quick goals late in the period.
Sullivan highlighted issues with puck management and battles, saying, “It's just not a recipe for success. If you don't manage the puck in this game and you don't play straight ahead, you're going to give teams easy offense.”
Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic expressed frustration over his performance but was defended by Sullivan who stated, “Listen, the goaltending had nothing to do with it tonight. We simply weren’t good enough as a team.”
As they prepare to host the Flyers again on Thursday at PPG Paints Arena at 7:30 PM, Karlsson emphasized focusing on each game individually to maintain their playoff hopes amidst a four-game losing streak.
Bryan Rust returned after illness and injury absences while Matt Grzelcyk recovered from an incident during Sunday's game against the Rangers. Grzelcyk described it as unexpected due to not having possession of the puck when hit by Matt Rempe.
