The Pittsburgh Penguins placed goaltender Tristan Jarry on waivers on January 15. If he clears, he will be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the American Hockey League. Joel Blomqvist will join Alex Nedeljkovic in Pittsburgh, as announced by Kyle Dubas.

“At this point, just feel it's best in the long run for the team and for Tristan to allow Joel to come up here,” stated Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and GM for the Penguins. He noted that Blomqvist's performance over the past year and a half has earned him an opportunity with the team.

Dubas explained that Jarry reported to training camp in excellent shape after being challenged to improve following a challenging 2023-24 season. However, Jarry's inconsistent performance at the start of this season led to a conditioning assignment. Despite winning four out of five games during this period, Jarry's inconsistency continued upon returning to Pittsburgh.

“From my view of it, it was just be patient,” Dubas said regarding their decision-making process leading up to their upcoming road trip.

Jarry started 17 out of 29 games but struggled with consistency, contributing to the team's difficulties. The Penguins are currently 2-5-3 since returning from the holiday break.

Head Coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged the emotional impact of Jarry’s departure within the team. “Tristan is a really good person...these types of decisions are hard,” Sullivan remarked.

Sullivan affirmed his belief in Jarry’s capabilities despite recent challenges: “I know that Tristan has it...he’s gone through a bit of a challenge here.”

Team members echoed similar sentiments about their collective responsibility. Sidney Crosby emphasized, “I think that’s the tough part.” Kris Letang added, “He's not alone in this.”

Nedeljkovic related his own experiences from Detroit and expressed support for Jarry: “I’m a huge supporter of his and believe in him.”

Moving forward, Sullivan hopes Nedeljkovic and Blomqvist can provide essential saves while players aim to improve defensive support. Crosby stressed improving defense: “We can’t give up breakaways or quality chances.” Bryan Rust also emphasized better defense: "I think we have to do a whole lot better job playing defense."
