Bryan Rust has reached significant milestones in his hockey career, marking 600 games and 400 points with the Pittsburgh Penguins. All of Rust's NHL games have been played with the Penguins, making him the ninth player in franchise history to achieve 400 points solely with the team. He joins notable names such as Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby.
Reflecting on his achievements, Rust said, “One, it means I'm getting old. Two, it's crazy how time flies.” He expressed pride in his long tenure with the team and hopes for more accomplishments ahead.
Head coach Mike Sullivan praised Rust for his consistent effort and versatility on the ice. “He's an honest player who brings an honest effort every game,” Sullivan stated. “He plays on both sides of the puck, he plays in every situation.”
Rust's journey began in Oakland County, Michigan, where he grew up a fan of the Red Wings before being drafted by Pittsburgh. Despite his Detroit roots, he has become a key player for the Penguins.
His development into a top-tier player is attributed to his drive and passion for improvement. Sullivan remarked on Rust's growth: “I just think it's his drive... His passion to play the game and his drive to continue to get better.”
Rust credits a pivotal summer in 2012 at Notre Dame as a turning point in his career. Encouraged by his brother Matt, who also faced challenges in professional hockey, Bryan worked hard to elevate his game.
“I think anyone that's competed at a high level has a story about when the game gets hard,” Matt shared about their shared experiences during that time.
Bryan continues to push himself forward professionally while balancing family life. He trains at former teammate Trevor Daley’s home gym and is building one at home to accommodate family schedules.
Matt reflects on Bryan's character: “I think the proudest thing that I carry with me... is just who he is as a person.” Bryan remains committed to doing things "the right way," both on and off the ice.
