Vascular surgeons at Allegheny Health Network's Cardiovascular Institute have announced the successful implementation of a new minimally invasive surgical procedure for treating peripheral artery disease (PAD) in western Pennsylvania. The procedure, known as percutaneous transmural arterial bypass (PTAB) with the DETOUR System by Endologix, was first performed at AHN Wexford Hospital under the leadership of Dr. Satish C. Muluk.
The PTAB procedure addresses PAD, a condition caused by fatty plaque buildup in blood vessels that affects over 12 million people in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association. It commonly impacts the lower extremities, leading to pain and discomfort.
"When left untreated, peripheral artery disease can cause patients debilitating pain, loss of mobility, sores on lower limbs and in extreme cases can lead to amputation, heart attack or stroke," Dr. Muluk stated. He noted that previous treatment options were limited for many patients due to comorbidities or risk profiles.
The DETOUR system offers a new solution by creating an alternative pathway for blood flow around blockages using a stent graft placed via a small incision near the groin. "This procedure...restores adequate oxygenated blood flow to minimize or completely eliminate symptoms caused by PAD," explained Dr. Muluk.
The FDA granted Breakthrough Device Designation to the DETOUR system in 2020 and approved it in June 2023 following clinical trials demonstrating its safety and effectiveness.
Dr. Stephen Bailey highlighted AHN's commitment to advanced surgical therapies: "We are nationally recognized for pioneering approaches to complex cardiovascular disease...Today's announcement marks another significant achievement for our exceptional team."
AHN Wexford Hospital has been recognized for high-quality care since its opening in September 2021 and continues to be a key location for delivering complex cardiovascular treatments.
