Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith recently discussed the challenge of managing two starting-caliber quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. With both players available for the past two weeks, Smith has been working to incorporate their talents without disrupting the team's offensive momentum.
Earlier in the season, injuries made this decision easier. Wilson missed the first six games due to a calf injury, while Fields dealt with a hamstring issue when Wilson returned. Now that both are healthy, Wilson has taken most snaps as starter, while Fields played ten combined plays over the last two games.
Smith explained, "Certainly, there's a plan, and sometimes you adapt to more." He added that finding balance between using Fields' skills and maintaining Wilson's rhythm is crucial: "There's a fine line."
Fields' recent performances included five carries for 43 yards rushing and one incomplete pass. However, he also faced setbacks like being stopped on a fourth-down run against the Browns. In contrast, Wilson threw for 270 yards and one touchdown in that game.
Despite challenges, the Steelers trust Fields as a passer. "We had a one-on-one matchup," Smith said regarding risky play decisions. The team aims not to limit Fields solely to running plays.
Wilson acknowledged the fluidity of game situations: "We have certain packages... But, the game is fluid." He emphasized readiness for both himself and Fields to contribute when needed.
The Steelers seek to strike a balance between utilizing both quarterbacks effectively as they aim for victories. Against opponents like the Browns, having dual threats provides an advantage.
Head coach Mike Tomlin also influences decisions about quarterback usage during games. Smith noted the importance of adapting strategies based on communication with coaching staff: "There's going to be good communication."
