Penguins appoint Wells Oliver as director of hockey systems

The Pittsburgh Penguins have appointed Wells Oliver as the team's Director of Hockey Systems. The announcement was made by Kyle Dubas, President of Hockey Operations and General Manager.

Oliver's responsibilities will include leading the development of data architecture and web application solutions for the Penguins' Hockey Operations department. He will report to Jonathan Erlichman, Vice President of Hockey Research, Development & Strategy. Oliver joins a team that includes Katerina Wu, Cam Charron, Luke Zolyak, Caleb Peña, and Chace McCallum on the Hockey Research & Development staff.

Before joining the Penguins, Oliver spent 15 seasons with the San Diego Padres. His most recent position there was Vice President of Baseball Systems. During his tenure in San Diego, he managed technology efforts for baseball operations and led a software engineering group. Oliver started with the Padres in 2010 as a Baseball Systems Architect and advanced to Director of Baseball Systems in 2018 before taking on his latest role in 2023.

Additionally, Oliver worked as a consultant for the Calgary Flames from 2015 to 2020. Earlier in his career, he served as Lead Developer for Smiley Media and Director of Technology for Small World Labs.
