The Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive strategy paid off in a recent game against the Baltimore Ravens, preserving an 18-16 lead with just over a minute left on the clock. The defense successfully anticipated and adjusted to the Ravens' plays, as explained by defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. "You have scenarios," Austin stated regarding maintaining the lead at Acrisure Stadium. He described how they analyzed past plays to make educated guesses about potential offensive moves from the Ravens.

The pivotal two-point stand was reminiscent of training camp drills, holding the Ravens to just over half their average points per game. "Our guys made a heck of a play," Austin remarked.

In response to the Ravens' formation featuring two running backs and other key players, the Steelers employed a "nickel" package, calling for a timeout right before quarterback Lamar Jackson's snap. CBS color analyst Charles Davis speculated it might have been a 'jump pass,' which head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged resembled that play during a press conference.

After regrouping post-timeout, the Steelers switched to their "base" defense. Jackson attempted another play but faced pressure from outside linebacker Nick Herbig, forcing him into an incomplete desperation throw when cornerback Joey Porter Jr. blocked his path.

Austin praised Porter's progress this season: "Joey's done a good job this year."

Rookie inside linebacker Payton Wilson contributed significantly with his first interception against Baltimore, adding to recent impactful performances by rookie players like nickel cornerback Beanie Bishop. The team demonstrated depth in defense, with Austin highlighting that multiple players stepped up when needed: "Somebody always seems to make a play."
