Steelers players Calvin Austin III and T.J. Watt have been recognized for their outstanding performances in the recent game against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Austin was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, while Watt received the honor of AFC Defensive Player of the Week.
During a critical moment with the game tied at 9-9, Austin returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown, which energized Steelers fans and shifted momentum in favor of his team. In addition to this remarkable play, Austin also caught a 29-yard touchdown pass, marking his first career game with two touchdowns. "Can't say enough about Calvin," said Coach Mike Tomlin. "I thought that's a big play, that punt return. It was a catalyst for us."
Reflecting on his achievement, Austin expressed relief and gratitude after not returning any punts last season. "That's not myself and the standard I hold myself to," he stated.
On defense, Watt contributed significantly with seven tackles and two sacks, including a pivotal strip-sack late in the game that he recovered himself. This play came at an opportune time as it helped secure the Steelers' lead when Giants quarterback Russell Wilson fumbled under pressure from Watt's defensive effort.
Watt acknowledged teamwork as crucial to his success: "We've done a good job schematically of trying to create those one-on-ones along with the backend covering just long enough."
Coach Tomlin praised Watt's consistent ability to deliver key plays during games: "I'm not surprised by it, but it doesn't mean that it's not appreciated."
This accolade marks Watt's eighth recognition as AFC Defensive Player of the Week throughout his career.
