Acrisure Stadium | Visit Pittsburg
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently emphasized the Pittsburgh Steelers' role in the growth of professional football both domestically and internationally. Speaking at a game between the Steelers and New York Giants at Acrisure Stadium, Goodell highlighted the franchise's significance within the NFL's long-term plans.
"The Steelers are one of our more capital franchises on a global basis," said Goodell. He noted their strong fan base in countries like Mexico and Ireland, attributing part of this success to former Steelers president Dan Rooney's influence as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland.
The Steelers hold international rights through the Global Markets Program in Mexico, Ireland, and Germany. This initiative allows NFL teams to expand their brand beyond U.S. borders through various engagement programs.
Domestically, the Steelers have been proactive in promoting girls' flag football alongside the Philadelphia Eagles and other organizations. Their efforts led to Pennsylvania approving girls' flag football as an official sport for the 2025-26 school year, with over 100 teams already established statewide.
Goodell expressed his support for these developments: "I think it's a great development... They’re empowered by it."
During his visit, Goodell also toured the Steelers Hall of Honor Museum at Acrisure Stadium, reflecting on his time spent in Pittsburgh during his college years at Washington & Jefferson College.
The commissioner underscored Pittsburgh's connection with the Steelers as a factor in selecting it as host city for the 2026 NFL Draft. "There will be an obvious economic impact," he stated, estimating over $200 million generated by hosting the event.
Goodell sees this as an opportunity to showcase Pittsburgh globally: "The number of people watching will be 50 million on a global basis."
