Steelers' offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is focused on developing a strategy to defeat the Jets, while the decision of who will start as quarterback rests with head coach Mike Tomlin. Smith, who has experience in making final quarterback decisions from his tenure as head coach in Atlanta, recognizes the complexity of such choices.

Reflecting on his time with the Falcons, Smith recalled benching veteran Marcus Mariota for rookie Desmond Ridder during the 2022 season and making similar adjustments in 2023 between Ridder and Taylor Heinicke. "I'll just speak on the one with Marcus from '22. Obviously that was a pretty emotional decision," Smith commented at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. He noted that while those situations could strain personal relationships, this current scenario is different.

The decision Tomlin faces involves whether to continue with Justin Fields, who has led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record, or switch to Russell Wilson. Wilson was initially chosen as starter but missed five games due to a calf injury before serving as backup in last Sunday's victory over the Raiders.

Despite their winning record, the Steelers rank low in total offense and passing yards per game but have shown strength in rushing. "We wish we were 6-0. We're not," Smith stated, acknowledging areas for improvement.

As they prepare for their match against the Jets, Smith anticipates challenges in passing due to New York's strong cornerbacks like Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed—though both Reed and Michael Carter have been dealing with injuries this week.

"I think they have one 300-yard passing game against them," said Smith about facing New York's defense. He emphasized needing a solid plan regardless of which quarterback starts for Pittsburgh.

Smith highlighted transparency and communication as key components of his coaching philosophy: "There's obviously a human side to it...you try to be as transparent as you can be." Decisions made by Tomlin will need clear explanations within this framework.
