After a strong start to the season, the Pittsburgh Steelers have faced challenges in their recent games, allowing 47 points over two losses. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin has identified issues with third-down conversions and injuries among key players as contributing factors.
The Steelers initially held opponents to a low conversion rate on third downs, but this success has diminished recently. Injuries to outside linebackers Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig have forced the team to rely on less experienced players like Jeremiah Moon, Adetokunbo Ogundeji, and Eku Leota.
"We're going to be short-handed," said Austin. He acknowledged that new players will need to step up in upcoming games. Isaiahh Loudermilk was also utilized outside his usual position due to these injuries.
Austin remains optimistic about the contributions of star player T.J. Watt, who recently reached 100 career sacks. "I think that they've been here now," Austin said regarding newer players learning from Watt's experience.
Communication is crucial for addressing recent defensive lapses, according to Austin. "It's always a work in progress," he stated, emphasizing the importance of practice and coordination.
Despite challenges, Austin maintains confidence in their defensive strategy: "We still hold to our principles here." The Steelers continue to balance blitzing with a four-man rush approach as they prepare for their next game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
