For Coach Mike Tomlin, the first meeting with T.J. Watt was a defining moment. "It goes back to when we were having dinner in Madison, Wisconsin, the night before his Pro Day," said Tomlin. Watt's focus on football over casual conversation left an impression on Tomlin, who saw potential in him as a future NFL star.

In 2017, the Pittsburgh Steelers sought a replacement for James Harrison and looked at various draft prospects. While Myles Garrett was the first overall pick that year, it was Watt who caught the attention of both Tomlin and General Manager Kevin Colbert. Watt stood out among his peers.

Watt recently made history during a game against the Dallas Cowboys by reaching 100 career sacks in just 109 games, becoming the second-fastest player to achieve this milestone since sacks became an official statistic in 1982. Only Reggie White reached this mark faster.

Tomlin praised Watt's talent and work ethic: "When you're one of two men in the sack conversation with the likes of the Minister of Defense (as White is known), I think it says it all." He emphasized that Watt's success is not surprising given his dedication and skill.

Watt is recognized as a leader within the Steelers' defense. "It's no question," said Tomlin regarding Watt's status among teammates. Despite having other accomplished players on their roster, Watt stands out due to his accolades as Defensive Player of the Year.

Even during contract negotiations in 2021, Watt demonstrated commitment by attending meetings and workouts without participating in drills until his deal was finalized. In his first game post-negotiation against Buffalo Bills, he delivered an impressive performance.

After achieving personal milestones during Sunday night's game at Acrisure Stadium with over 67,000 attendees present – one of their highest recorded attendances – Watt remained focused on team success despite losing to Cowboys 20-17: "It's all about wanting to win."

Watt expressed frustration over not winning playoff games yet: "It's been tough not getting there... When I'm done... I want them to say T.J. Watt was a Super Bowl champion."
