Jalen Beeks was in Newport, California, with his family Monday when he received the call informing him of his trade. Although pitching for a non-playoff Rockies team made it a possibility, the news still brought an element of surprise typical at the Trade Deadline.

“A little chaotic, but exciting as well,” Beeks remarked.

Beeks' transition to the Pirates marked one of three significant acquisitions by the team aimed at bolstering their roster with Major League veterans. Alongside Beeks, outfielder Bryan De La Cruz from the Marlins and utilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Blue Jays joined the Pirates. These moves were intended to strengthen both the lineup and bullpen.

"I think we're better today than we were about four hours ago," Derek Shelton stated Tuesday after the Deadline had passed.

The arrival of these players addressed specific needs for the Pirates. Beeks provides a much-needed left-handed reliever role that had been vacant due to Ryan Borucki's injury. Holding lefties to a .179 batting average this season underscores his effectiveness in this position.

“It’s a really good team,” Beeks commented on joining the Pirates. “I liked the mentality from the other side. I’m curious to see what it’s like on this side.”

De La Cruz's acquisition came at an opportune moment with Joshua Palacios' injury but was also long sought after by General Manager Ben Cherington.

“Everybody has received me with open arms,” De La Cruz said through interpreter and coach Stephen Morales. “It feels like I'm part of the family already, and it feels good to come at this point, just to be able to contribute to the Pirates winning."

His power-hitting ability is particularly valued; he hit 18 home runs for Miami this season and showcased potential with strong base hits during his debut for Pittsburgh.

"Just proud of our work during the offseason,” De La Cruz said regarding his improved power hitting. “I worked on my power during the offseason, and it's showing up right now."

Kiner-Falefa also saw an increase in offensive performance this year, which he attributes to playing confidently and adjusting his approach as a push hitter. His .292 batting average and .758 OPS are career highs.

However, Kiner-Falefa's defensive skills remain his standout attribute. Capable across multiple positions except first base, he posted impressive defensive metrics even while dealing with a left knee injury recently.

“I don't want to say too much, but I feel like I'm a game-changer on defense,” Kiner-Falefa asserted. “I've missed a month but am still metrically at the top of the game.”

Currently on rehab assignment due to injury, Kiner-Falefa could be activated soon and may fill in at second base amid Nick Gonzales' absence.

Transitioning from struggling Blue Jays to playoff-contending Pirates represents significant change for Kiner-Falefa.

“I was coming back to try to win the batting title in American League,” he said. “I think that mentality switches to winning a World Series now.”
