LATROBE, Pa. – The eighth day of training camp at Saint Vincent College saw temperatures reach 86 degrees, with a feels-like temperature of 89. The routine of dormitory living, cafeteria meals, and repetitive practice can wear on players, but professional football demands consistent professionalism on the field.
Coach Mike Tomlin addressed a skirmish that broke out during Wednesday's practice, emphasizing his intolerance for such behavior. "We got a little bit less than professional and chippy today," said Tomlin. "It's an opportunity to teach and learn. As part of this process as much as we hate it, we'll learn and grow from that."
The incident occurred when quarterback Justin Fields was bumped to the ground by inside linebacker Elandon Roberts during a run. Center Nate Herbig reacted by engaging with Roberts, leading to others joining in.
In the day's 7-shots drill, the offense secured its third consecutive win with three rushing touchdowns. Jaylen Warren scored first on a middle run; backup QB Kyle Allen followed by exploiting a defensive gap; Najee Harris clinched the final score with a vault into the end zone after taking a handoff from Fields. Wide receiver Van Jefferson also contributed with a one-handed catch from Fields.
Observations from practice included significant use of fullback Jack Colletto as a lead blocker for Harris and Warren. Rookie Troy Fautanu showed improvement after struggling against T.J. Watt's pass rush move on Tuesday, performing well in three consecutive reps against Nick Herbig on Wednesday. Cornerback Grayland Arnold made notable plays as a slot cornerback, including intercepting a John Rhys Plumlee pass.
Tomlin provided an injury update: "OLB David Perales got a knee injury that's being evaluated. OLB Kyron Johnson had a hamstring get a little tight. We had to pull him out." He also mentioned minor injuries typical for this stage of training camp and noted that veterans Isaac Seumalo, Cam Heyward, and T.J. Watt were given rest days to allow other players opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities.
Roman Wilson sustained an ankle sprain, with further details expected following medical evaluations.
