The Pirates have bolstered their outfield by acquiring Bryan De La Cruz from the Marlins, according to a source who spoke with MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Tuesday. In exchange, Pittsburgh is sending first baseman Garret Forrester, ranked as the Pirates' No. 18 prospect, and right-handed pitcher Jun-Seok Shim to Miami. The clubs have not yet confirmed the transaction.
De La Cruz has hit 18 home runs this season with a .707 OPS. Last year, he recorded 19 home runs and 78 RBIs over 153 games. The 27-year-old remains under team control for three more years.
He joins a Pirates team aiming for an NL Wild Card spot. Pittsburgh recently designated outfielder Jack Suwinski for assignment, and De La Cruz is expected to fill the right field position alongside Bryan Reynolds and Michael A. Taylor.
In addition to acquiring De La Cruz, the Pirates traded for utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Blue Jays. Kiner-Falefa has had a strong season in Toronto, posting a .292/.338/.420 slash line with a 115 OPS+. He played multiple positions including second base, third base, shortstop, and center field with the Blue Jays. In return, Pittsburgh is sending Double-A outfielder Charles McAdoo, ranked as their No. 29 prospect.
