Rep. Summer Lee, a U.S. Congress member representing Pennsylvania's 12th district since 2023, recently expressed concerns through her social media platform about the actions and influence of Elon Musk, an unelected billionaire. Her tweets raise questions about transparency and accountability in matters involving Musk's access to sensitive financial systems and personal data.
On February 5, 2025, Rep. Lee posted on social media regarding a blocked subpoena for Elon Musk. She stated: "We moved to subpoena Elon Musk—an unelected billionaire with massive conflicts of interest, a personal vendetta + access to our most sensitive financial systems. But Republicans blocked it." She further questioned the motives behind this action by asking, "Who are they protecting? Because it sure isn’t the American people."
The following day, on February 6, she continued her critique by questioning why such an individual needs significant access to citizens' personal data and financial systems: "Why does an unelected billionaire need access to your personal data + a $6 trillion payment system?" Rep. Lee also highlighted concerns over transparency and accountability: "And if this operation is so legit, why is there zero transparency—and why is Elon Musk so afraid to answer questions?"
Later that day, Rep. Lee addressed issues related to drug policy in another tweet dated February 6: "Decades of harsh sentences didn’t stop overdoses. Locking people up didn’t end addiction." She criticized past policies under the War on Drugs for leading primarily to mass incarceration rather than solving addiction problems and called for changes targeting failed policies affecting minority communities.
