Michael McKenry informed Andrew McCutchen that the Pittsburgh Pirates have found their new hitting coach, Matt Hague, a former teammate from the 2012 season. Reflecting on this development, McKenry stated, "You don’t ever assume one of your former teammates is going to be your coach."

Alex Presley, another member of the 2012 Pirates and now a broadcaster for SportsNet Pittsburgh, played with Hague in Double-A Altoona in 2010. During that time, Hague was recognized as the Curve's Iron Man. Presley noted Hague's unique approach and preparation stood out among other future big leaguers on the team.

Presley commented on Hague's baseball acumen: “If I wanted to know what was going on with a pitcher, he was a guy I felt good about going to.”

Hague is anticipated to take over as the Pirates' hitting coach in 2025. While the team has not officially announced this move, sources confirm it. General Manager Ben Cherington previously expressed interest in achieving “tighter cohesion” within the hitting team. This search concluded with Hague's selection.

Presley and McKenry shared their excitement about Hague’s potential as a coach based on their past experiences with him. Presley remarked: “He was a guy that, you knew, he was a baseball guy.” Meanwhile, McKenry added: “When you love it, you love it, and I think that’s Hague, to his soul.”

McKenry humorously described them as “baseball rats,” suggesting players like them often find success in coaching roles due to their dedication.

The Pirates are hopeful that Hague’s competitive spirit will resonate with players and help bridge communication gaps regarding hitting strategies. Presley highlighted Hague's approachable nature: “Matt was always a very approachable, fun guy in the clubhouse.”

McKenry emphasized his belief in Hague's capabilities despite limited Major League coaching experience: "I think it’s a win-win for him and the organization." He acknowledged the importance of having someone familiar with wearing black and gold contributing positively to both fans and the organization.
