The Steelers, in collaboration with the National Football League, made a special visit to the Clairton Bears Varsity Football and Clairton Bears Girls Flag Football teams. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Hall of Fame running back Curtis Martin surprised the teams with their presence.
During his visit, Commissioner Goodell expressed enthusiasm for being at the western Pennsylvania football stronghold. He congratulated the varsity team on their undefeated season and acknowledged head coach Wayne Wade for being named Steelers Week 8 Coach of the Week. Coach Wade will be recognized at the Steelers' game against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
Goodell also discussed his vision for expanding girls' flag football. He highlighted a significant milestone with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's recent sanctioning of girls' flag football as a high school sport in Pennsylvania, a move that has had strong backing from the Steelers.
Curtis Martin shared his experiences with young athletes from both teams, recounting his time playing at Taylor Allderdice High School and later at the University of Pittsburgh. He spoke about how football helped him overcome personal challenges.
Dan Rooney, Steelers Director of Business Development & Strategy, stated: "The Steelers were honored to work with the NFL to organize today's visit to Clairton High School. Clairton is an iconic football community where both the varsity football and girls flag football teams exemplify the true spirit and impact of western Pennsylvania football."
