Gold Glove finalists announced; winners to be revealed on November 3

The 2024 Rawlings Gold Glove Award finalists were revealed, with winners to be announced on ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” on November 3 at 8:30 p.m. ET. This year marks the second time the utility spot is included among the awards, which are determined by a voting process involving Major League Baseball managers and coaches, alongside the SABR Defensive Index.

In the American League, notable contenders include Griffin Canning of the Angels for pitcher and Freddy Fermin of the Royals for catcher. The first base category sees Carlos Santana of the Twins leading with +14 Outs Above Average. Andrés Giménez from the Guardians is in line for his third consecutive win at second base. The competition at third base includes Alex Bregman from the Astros and José Ramírez from the Guardians.

In other positions, Bobby Witt Jr. from the Royals leads AL shortstops in Outs Above Average, while Steven Kwan from the Guardians aims for his third Gold Glove in left field despite injuries. Jarren Duran of the Red Sox stands out in center field with significant contributions including leading MLB in outfield assists.

For right field, Wilyer Abreu from the Red Sox made a strong debut season showing with 18 Defensive Runs Saved. Willi Castro from the Twins is a standout candidate for utility player after logging appearances across five different positions.

In the National League, Chris Sale of the Braves and Zack Wheeler of the Phillies are finalists for pitchers. Catchers include Patrick Bailey of the Giants who led all players with a +22 fielding run value. Christian Walker seeks another win at first base with +13 Outs Above Average.

Brice Turang from Brewers leads second basemen with 21 Defensive Runs Saved while Matt Chapman stands out at third base with 17 Defensive Runs Saved during his first year with Giants. Dansby Swanson tops shortstops in Outs Above Average.

Ian Happ could secure another Gold Glove in left field, having led all left fielders with eight Defensive Runs Saved this season. Brenton Doyle remains a strong defender in center field for Rockies, and Sal Frelick leads right fielders by a margin in Defensive Runs Saved.

Jared Triolo of Pirates competes for utility honors after notable performances splitting time between second and third bases.

Winners will be decided through a voting system where votes account for 75% of selection total while SABR Defensive Index contributes to 25%.
