The Pittsburgh Steelers faced their first defeat of the season against the Indianapolis Colts, losing 27-24 after a valiant effort to overcome an early 17-0 deficit. Coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged the Colts' strong start but emphasized that his team's performance was not up to par.

"First, I've got to give credit to the Indianapolis Colts," said Tomlin. "I thought they really brought it, particularly at the beginning of the game. But the beginning of games don't really define games; it's just the beginning. I thought we had plenty of opportunities."

Tomlin appreciated his team's fight but stressed that effort alone is not enough in professional football. "Fight is required in this business," he stated. "But I am acknowledging that."

Turnovers were a significant factor in the loss, with two fumbles and missed opportunities for interceptions contributing to their downfall. "Just on the surface level, you can look at the turnover game," Tomlin noted. "There's a reason why we were unsuccessful today."

Despite these challenges, Justin Fields led a spirited comeback attempt in the second half, scoring two rushing touchdowns and connecting with Pat Freiermuth for another score. However, it was not enough to secure victory.

"I'm appreciative of the fight," said Tomlin again, reiterating his earlier sentiments.

Injuries also played a role, with guard James Daniels and running back/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson both suffering ankle injuries during the game.

Fields expressed frustration over their slow start and mistakes but remained hopeful about future performances. "First and foremost, you can tip your caps to the other team, but at the end of the day I think we beat ourselves," he said.

The final drive saw a critical fumble between center Zach Frazier and Fields, which ultimately sealed their fate. Fields took responsibility for this error: "It was my fault... After I kicked my leg, I've got to be ready for the ball no matter when it's going to come or not."
