The Steelers faced a tough defeat against the Colts at Lucas Oil Field, ending their 3-0 start to the season with a 27-24 loss. The game began poorly for the Steelers, who quickly found themselves down 17-0. Their defense, which had been a strength in previous games, struggled significantly.
Coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged the team's effort but highlighted several critical mistakes. "I thought (Indianapolis) really brought it, particularly at the beginning of the game," he said. "I appreciate the fight of our group... Fight is required in this business, but I am acknowledging it, and it is appreciated."
The Colts capitalized on early opportunities, with quarterback Anthony Richardson making key plays before leaving due to a hip injury. Veteran Joe Flacco stepped in and was effective in crucial moments. Indianapolis' first drive resulted in a touchdown after just eight plays, followed by another touchdown drive that covered 86 yards in nine plays.
Cam Heyward reflected on the defensive struggles: "We didn't do great at stopping the run early... But (allowing) 85 (rushing) yards in the first half is unacceptable." The Steelers were also dealing with several injuries, further complicating their efforts.
Despite falling behind early, the Steelers' offense showed resilience. Justin Fields completed 18-of-29 passes for 275 yards and one touchdown while the rushing attack added two more touchdowns. However, turnovers and procedural errors prevented them from completing a comeback.
Tomlin pointed out specific issues contributing to the loss: "The Steelers lost because of a minus-2 in turnover ratio; because they dropped interceptions... because they didn't cover an Indianapolis fumble; and because they were flagged for some damaging penalties."
Heyward emphasized the need for a stronger start: "You fight your tail off to get back in position, but we have to start faster... We missed opportunities too – turnovers, not getting off the field on third down."
Despite this setback, the Steelers remain atop the AFC North Division. This loss serves as a reminder of areas needing improvement as they move forward.
