The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense faced challenges in their recent game against the Indianapolis Colts, resulting in a 27-24 loss at Lucas Oil Stadium. This defeat marked the Steelers' first of the season, raising questions about whether it was an off game for their defense or if the Colts discovered weaknesses previously unnoticed by other teams.

Before this game, the Steelers led several defensive categories in the NFL. However, they allowed more points (27) than they had in their first three games combined (26). They also gave up eight third-down conversions on 15 attempts, surpassing their previous total of seven conversions allowed on 32 attempts.

Indianapolis capitalized on its running game, with running back Jonathan Taylor and quarterback Anthony Richardson combining for 70 yards on 11 first-quarter carries. This early success helped the Colts build a 17-0 lead by the second quarter. Despite Richardson leaving the game due to a hip injury after a hit from Minkah Fitzpatrick, Indianapolis had already inflicted significant damage.

"We shouldn't have put our offense in that situation in the first place," said Steelers inside linebacker Patrick Queen. "The first two drives, 14 points, that's totally unacceptable. We've got to get better. Whatever it takes."

After Richardson's exit, backup quarterback Joe Flacco stepped in and threw a touchdown pass on third down to extend Indianapolis' lead to 14-0 after two possessions. The Steelers' run defense improved later but still allowed significant yardage early on.

"We didn't do great stopping the run early," said defensive tackle Cam Heyward. "In the second half, we were better, but 85 yards in a half is unacceptable."

The Steelers struggled with third-down defense throughout the game. Slot receiver Josh Downs converted multiple crucial third downs and scored a touchdown on third-and-4. Michael Pittman Jr. and Drew Ogletree also made key third-down catches.

"Third-and-long is always an advantage for the defense, but we didn't take advantage of it," said Heyward.

Indianapolis exploited Pittsburgh's nickel defense by maintaining pace and keeping nose tackle Keeanu Benton off the field.

"Coach (Mike) Tomlin does a great job of preparing us," said nickel linebacker Payton Wilson. "There were some communication things we've got to get fixed when we get back."

A controversial personal foul call against Fitzpatrick further complicated matters for Pittsburgh when he collided with rookie Adonai Mitchell while attempting to make a play on an overthrown ball by Flacco.

"I thought we were playing football," Fitzpatrick commented regarding his penalty. Elliott supported him: "That was legal... He didn't even lead with his head."

Offensively, Pittsburgh managed to score a season-high 24 points but missed several opportunities due to penalties and turnovers.

"We dropped interception opportunities... turned over offensively – one time in red zone," said Tomlin.

Quarterback Justin Fields performed well overall but faced issues handling snaps during critical moments late in-game situations—a recurring problem dating back preseason games—and mishandled
