During a recent news conference, the coach addressed several topics concerning team practices and player development. When asked about the reason behind practicing in pads every Wednesday, he confirmed it was crucial for their ongoing development. "We're very much still developing in all areas," he said. The coach emphasized that playing against different defensive fronts requires specific preparation, hence the need for padded practices.

On quarterback Justin Fields' role and preparation, he mentioned that Wednesdays start with a 7-8 a.m. meeting to discuss game plans and leadership roles. "Leadership is a part of his job, and it's my job to assist him in that," he stated.

The coach also discussed how they challenge Fields to improve continuously by saying, "Don't allow routine to become routine." He highlighted the importance of staying engaged in every aspect of their routines.

Regarding communication during games, he explained there are multiple ways information is passed on to ensure proper personnel groups are on the field. This includes signals from coaches and players or direct communication through Arthur Smith to Justin Fields in the huddle.

The topic of offensive linemen finishing plays was also covered. The coach described finishing as both a physical and mental task essential for success in critical moments of games.

When asked about rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson's challenges transitioning from college to professional football, he acknowledged Wilson's limited experience due to an early injury but noted that many young wideouts successfully transition each year.

On winning tight games, the coach noted it fosters growth and confidence within the team. He remarked on how positive experiences aid buy-in from players: "You win or you grow... but growing while winning is optimally what we all seek."

Discussing DeMarvin Leal's role at outside linebacker, he praised Leal's versatility and athleticism: "He's got good body control... he's made two tackles in three weeks."

Comparing running backs Jonathan Taylor and J.K. Dobbins, he pointed out Taylor's significant long speed as an X-factor making him extremely dangerous when breaking into second and third levels.

On signing CB C.J. Henderson to the practice squad, he highlighted Henderson’s impressive draft measurables: "He checked all the boxes... His game tape was really impressive."

Finally, addressing Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson's lack of experience, he suggested that defenses might play mental games with inexperienced quarterbacks to make them uncomfortable rather than relying solely on physical tactics.
