Pittsburgh Review

The Pittsburgh Penguins are set to face the Detroit Red Wings tonight at 7:00 PM, marking the first of two consecutive games. The game will be streamed on the Penguins website and can be heard on the Penguins app and 105.9 The X.

SportsNet Pittsburgh will broadcast five of the seven preseason games for the Penguins, including a special Kraft Hockeyville game against the Ottawa Senators in Sudbury on Sunday, September 29 at 7:00 PM. The other non-televised game is scheduled for Thursday, October 3 at 7:00 PM in Columbus.

Josh Getzoff returns as the play-by-play voice for SportsNet Pittsburgh, joined by color commentators Colby Armstrong, Mike Rupp, and Phil Bourque. Hailey Hunter will serve as rinkside reporter. All preseason games will also be available on radio via 105.9 The X with Joe Brand handling play-by-play duties alongside Bourque.

Earlier this summer, David Quinn was added to Head Coach Mike Sullivan’s staff as an assistant coach responsible for overseeing the team’s defensive group. Quinn has over three decades of coaching experience and has previously served as head coach for both the San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers. He has also represented Team USA at various international competitions.

Nikolai Knyzhov joins Pittsburgh after spending five seasons with the San Jose Sharks organization, while goaltender Kevin Richardson has split time between the AHL and ECHL over recent seasons.

At this year’s NHL Draft in Las Vegas, Pittsburgh selected six players including defenseman Harrison Brunicke (44th overall) and forward Tanner Howe (46th overall). Both players have shown promise in their junior careers and international appearances.

Pittsburgh's prospects had a successful run at the 2024 Prospects Challenge in Buffalo, finishing with a perfect record of 3-0.

On September 16, Sidney Crosby signed a two-year contract extension with an average annual value of $8.7 million. Crosby will enter his 20th season with Pittsburgh holding numerous franchise records and ranking among NHL leaders in several statistical categories.

Mike Sullivan was named head coach of Team USA for upcoming international tournaments including the Four Nations Face-Off in 2025 and the Olympic Games in 2026. David Quinn will serve as an assistant coach for Team USA at these events.
